Signs You Might Have Termites

Termites are very sneaky little creatures. They’ll eat your home’s structure for a looooong time before most ever notice there’s a problem. There are however several important signs to look out for that may help you determine if you have a termite infestation.

  • Sound

While an incredibly quiet sound, termites do make a sound as they dig into your dry wood. It’s a little bit like a clicking sound. Often what we tell people is to put their ear to the wall. If those little devils are eating away at your wood, you may actually be able to hear them chowing down.

  • Flying termites

Yes, you heard that right. Each colony generally has flying termites that are essentially scouts. If there are flying termites buzzing around your home, it may be time to get it inspected for termites or termite damage.

  • Hollow Sounding Wood

If you knock your knuckles on a solid piece of timber, it’s got a dense sound. You know right away that’s a good piece of wood. If you however knock on a termite ridden piece of wood, it may sound more like a papery hollow sound. Some call it “punky”.

  • Tunnels

As they move through your structure, causing chaos wherever they go—termites create tunnels. If you are seeing tunnels in your wood, call a professional pest control specialist.

Termite Removal Process

Liquid pesticides will often have to be applied directly to the affected areas. If access to the areas is limited, holes may have to be drilled into surfaces to ensure pesticide penetration. This may sound a little invasive, but it is NOTHING compared to the potential costs of having termites ruin the structural integrity of your home.

If the problem is less severe, or a homeowner is looking at more preventative maintenance—termite baits are setup that spread poison throughout the colony.

For full blown infestations, total fumigation may be necessary. This process is certainly invasive, and is an investment in time. Many pest control clients opt for this to save their home for termite destruction.

How To Deter Termites

The best way to beat termites, is to never have them at all. The best way to keep termites away, is to ensure your foundation stays dry. Moisture may attract termites, so keeping moisture away from the home is a great first step. Another great way to prevent termites is to never store firewood against your foundation.
